Historic Lightwood, Circa 1760

At no time is Lightwood more enjoyable than in December. The weather is cold enough for fires in the fireplaces, and the house is

decorated with a Christmas tree and other simple traditional touches.

Early in December, Colonial Williamsburg kicks off the Christmas Season with The Grand Illumination. For one night the entire

historic area of Williamsburg is filled with music and entertainment, bonfires, lighted torches, and a truly grand finale of fireworks

from three different locations in town. For the rest of the month of December, the buildings are decorated with traditional greenery

and candles in the windows. Many special events, feasts and concerts fill the days and nights in old Williamsburg, as people from

all over the world gather to experience a Colonial Christmas.

In the 18th century, December was the social season in Williamsburg. Families would travel from their respective plantations to

Williamsburg to attend plays, balls, dances and dinners. One can have the same experience today, traveling from Lightwood to

Williamsburg, to celebrate the season in many of the same ways our ancestors did.
